Beware the free AdWords Advice!

September 27, 2007 | Filed Under Online Marketing, SEO

Be careful with the Google AdWords.

If you don’t know what you’re doing it’s going to feel a lot like gambling…you’ll lose a lot of money in a short amount of time. You won’t even be sure what you did to make that happen.

This is usually the point where people start asking their friends and networking groups for advice.

I just read in an email response to someone (I’m going to paraphrase so I’m not being a bad list member)…

The keyword “jobs in Chicago” is going to cost more than “jobs”

SAY WHAT???

There is no universe where a more specific keyword is going to be more expensive. Sure you’re probably going to want to have “Sears Tower” and “Hancock Center” as negative keyphrases as well…negatives are very important in making sure random people don’t cost YOU money.

Also…you may be wondering why my free advice should not be suspect.

If you weren’t a little suspicious, I’d be a little worried! But I’m a Google AdWords Qualified Individual…and have the logo to prove it!

Most of my campaigns are run under my other business name, and until we qualify for the Google AdWords Qualified Company logo with Marketing Curve, you only get a qualified individual. (The difference between the two is a few thousand dollars in AdWords budget money to Google…)

When you ask for advice - ask someone who knows and runs campaigns and knows the rules and regulations that Google has set forth for their Qualification.

Feel free to ask your AdWords question by leaving a comment. I’ll be happy to respond, and let’s see if we can get more people a little more knowledgeable about AdWords!
